In Bordeaux Chronicle, photographer Peter Aaron’s images from 1969 and 2024—and commentary from wine expert and author Jane Anson— illuminate the region’s dramatic transformation over the past half a century.
When photographer Peter Aaron first traveled to Bordeaux in 1969, on assignment for wine entrepreneur Alexis Lichine, he encountered a region far removed from the sophisticated international wine capital it’s become. The son of Sam Aaron, cofounder of the legendary New York wine merchant Sherry-Lehmann, Aaron arrived with rare access to the world of fine wine. His photographs from that first journey reveal a quieter Bordeaux of working vineyards, weathered stone cellars, and modest family-run châteaux—a world where winemaking was less spectacle than daily life. Through Aaron’s lens, the region appears as a deeply traditional viticultural landscape shaped by generations of winemaking families and a way of life grounded in craft, patience, and place.
More than fifty years later, Aaron returned to the same estates he had once documented. Where his earlier photographs captured a modest agricultural landscape, he now found a Bordeaux transformed—defined by architecturally ambitious wineries, expanded vineyards, technological innovation, and a thriving global wine culture. By placing his photographs from 1969 alongside those taken in 2024, he reveals both the region’s dramatic evolution and its enduring commitment to heritage, craftsmanship, and terroir.
Jane Anson’s accompanying text provides historical and cultural context for this visual journey. Based in Bordeaux since 2003, Anson examines the estates, appellations, and winemaking families that have shaped the region’s trajectory, grounding Aaron’s images in deep expertise and contemporary insight. Together, Aaron and Anson present Bordeaux as a region transformed yet rooted in tradition—an agricultural landscape that has become a global symbol of wine excellence while preserving the cultural identity at its core.

About the Authors
Peter Aaron (peteraaron.net) is a renowned architectural photographer whose career began under the mentorship of Ezra Stoller. Known for his dynamic compositions, meticulous lighting, and cinematic approach, Aaron has contributed to Architectural Digest, The New York Times, Elle Decor, The World of Interiors, and numerous international design publications. His book of photographs Syria: Before the Deluge was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2018. In Bordeaux Chronicle, he revisits the region that shaped his early career, creating a landmark photographic record of Bordeaux’s transformation. He lives in Hudson, New York.
Jane Anson (janeanson.com) has lived in Bordeaux since 2003 and is widely regarded as the leading authority on the region’s wines. She is the award-winning author of Inside Bordeaux, often called the “Bordeaux bible,” and founder of Inside Bordeaux. A graduate of the DUAD tasting diploma at the University of Bordeaux Institute of Oenology and an accredited wine educator at the École du Vin, she has written for Decanter, The New York Times, and leading international wine journals.
